Benefit – John Henderson

As many of you in Atlanta know, John Henderson was shot and killed execution style on January 7. He was killed by thieves who broke into The Standard where John was a bartender and closing up for the night.

On Wednesday, January 28, 2009 there will be a Dine Out to Increase the Crime Stoppers Reward for the arrest of the assailants.

If you would like to make a private donation visit Crimestoppers.

Click here for a list of participating restaurants.

Places to Support – Upper Chattahoochee River Keeper

Tomorrow, Wednesday, June 18, all seven Atlanta area Whole Foods Market and Harry’s Farmers Market stores will be donating 5% of that day’s sales to the Save the Hooch campaign.

And as we know, the Chattahoochee needs all the help it can get.

I have to say, I was in the Buckhead Whole Foods yesterday and there is a new product in the To Go Food Case. Vegan Crab Cakes. So yummy and tastes just like the real thing.

Fall Applications for JLA

I will be a Provisional Advisor this year. Hope to see you there.

Events – JLA Tour of Kitchens

I will be doing my 3 hour rotation this weekend at the Tour of Kitchens. Get info and tickets here.

It’s a great way to see some amazing kitchens and get ideas for your own renovation. All while supporting a fabulous organization, JLA.

Hope to see you out. Have an amazing weekend.

Junior League – accepting applications right now!

We all know how much I love being in the League. I just think it is the best. I was corresponding with Leslie regarding differences in the Atlanta area Leagues, and honestly, I don’t know as much as I probably should. But my advise if you are thinking about joining and making the commitment, is to go to a Provisional meeting and make sure it is right for you. Also, make sure that League is right for you. I know they say that there are “boundary lines” for who can join according to where you live, but I have heard if you want to join a different League than your geographic area and ask nicely, they will let you.

So here are the links to some of the area Leagues.

I am partial to Atlanta, but they are all great and worth your time and effort.

Places to Support – Oakland Cemetery

So I went to Nashville, TN for my 10 year high school reunion at Harpeth Hall School. Exciting times. While I was up there I met up with a friend that I had lost touch with, Penny Anderson. We had some fun times back in the day. It seems Penny has been busy during our time apart. She went to Oglethorpe for undergrad and has been working for non-profits here in Atlanta. Currently, she works for the Oakland Cemetery Foundation.

The Oakland Cemetery Foundation works to preserve the Oakland Cemetery on Memorial Drive. It is very interesting place and quite beautiful. There are free tours and it is not morbid in the least. The City cannot spend money to preserve private graves, so the work of the Foundation is important to preserve people’s graves such Margaret Mitchell and Bobby Jones.

Six Feet Under, one of my favorite places to chill, is across the street. The owners are heavily involved in the Foundation and regularly have fundraisers for the Cemetery. It would fun to make an afternoon of a visit. Don’t you think?
