My 5 Favorite Trash-tastic Things About Atlanta
I was thinking about the good and the bad of Atlanta when I was taking pictures in my neighborhood late yesterday. Like the fact the Krispy Kreme HOT sign is always on, but there are homeless on the hill beside my condo complex.
It is funny to live in a neighborhood where there is the best of life, $2 million dollar homes, and the worst, prostitution and drug dealing, just blocks away. But that is Intown.
Then I started thinking about the fun stuff that would not be considered high class, but that I have had a lot of fun taking part in. All of the below are very close to my neighborhood. These are all old standbys here in Atlanta. And I highly recommend venturing out and trying if you are looking for something different and cheaper to do.
1. The Clermont Lounge. Not your average dive bar. Many awards. Blondie is a site to behold.
2. Pitchers of Pabst at Moe’s and Joe’s. A tried and true tradition. 60 years and still going strong. Could not beat it when I did not have any money.
3. Varsity Cheeseburger with pimento cheese on it. Extra pickles. Orange Drink.
Need I say more. (I’m not eating those right now
)
4. Yacht Club in Little Five Points. There is no Lilly or Vineyard Vines here. Just bikers, hippies, people slumming, and anyone else who happens by. No martinis. Pitchers, shots and other stiff drinks.
5. Kid Rock. He got in a fight at Waffle House. HOW FREAKIN’ TACKY.

It’s funny, we have the same thing here in Charlotte - sketchy one block, exclusive on the next. Some of my favorite spots are not the most exclusive but it is nice to have a change every now and then.
I love the Varsity in Atlanta! I go there each time I visit. I hope you are having a nice week! What did you decide to do about your hotel in Vegas?
I am going to stay at theHotel over at Mandalay actually.
I’ve got the link up on my tumblr site. Seems to be very chic and more boutique. Which is more my speed.
Haven’t made it to Clermont yet, but I feel a visit in my very near future.
I love your list - I’ve made 4 of the 4 spots. I’m thinking it’s a good idea to keep which ones to myself…….have a great weekend!
Sorry, I meant 4 of the 5. It’s been a long week….
Five Points in General is trash-tastic - all those sketchy boutiques selling el cheap-o dresses… I made the mistake of going there once with my Buckhead boyfriend. We looked like cartoon characters comparatively.
Anything with the phrase “trash-tastic” in the title is always fun. I love seeing those kinds of lists. I’ve seen enough of them about Baltimore (the home of John Waters and HonFest) to last me a few years. Though I think you’ve inspired me to do another
As fabulous as I’m sure Atlanta is, this post is motivating me to see it even more!
The closest I’ve come yet, apart from the airport, is Augusta, where I visited my cousin and his wife and kids a few years ago. Not much chance to see kitsch when you’ve got two young girls in tow watching Bob the Builder on the portable TV they’ve plugged into the car’s lighter. The most trash-tastic it got was the local hibachi grill, which really wasn’t at all. We did watch a few minutes of Big Brother, which I have not watched since (this was 2003 mind you).
