Events and other things

September 5 from 7-9 Honey Nails is having a party to celebrate the launch of honeyluxe. 7-9 pm
RSVP to luxe@honeynail.com
Food from The Warren City Club. Plus, Honeyteanies.

I have been invited to a fun event next Thursday night, so will report back later.

Had the preliminary meeting for the charity event I am doing. Thankfully, it is getting moved to March. Now we have time to do it right. So much work.

Leaving for DC in the morning. There is nothing like trying to work (emails) while looking at pictures of the apartment on my Treo while trying to find a couch on line and talking to Ed on the phone. Almost counterproductive, but not quite.

So, off to DC and College Park. Happy Labor Day!!!!

Have fun in DC and College Park! Funny, almost every blogger I’m reading is going out of town this Labor Day. I myself am driving to Virginia to see the Jamestown Settlement and Powhatan Village. I’ve had to put it off again and again this summer and now I’m just going to do it. It’s the 400th anniversary and as close as I am I should kick myself if I wait until ‘08 to see it.

As for College Park: I truly can think of nothing really worth eating there. So off to…

DC: I know you’ve checked DC Foodies. I can’t give much help with it. When I look for good places to eat, I usually flip through Washingtonian Magazine. I’ve gotten some good suggestions from there. Jaleo is one I found there, and on (aargh!) Rachael Ray’s $40 a Day. It’s a tapas place near the Convention Center and is very good. Other places I really like:
*Wok N’ Roll in Chinatown. They have a sushi / sashimi happy hour Monday through Friday. Don’t know what they have on the weekend though.
    * Meskerem in Adams Morgan, which is Ethiopian. I would eat there all the time if I could.
    * Logan Tavern off Logan Circle, on the edge of Dupont Circle and across the street from a Whole Foods. I had some tasty calamari there, a rockfish dish that was out of this world, and I saw a fried green tomato with peach relish and lime cream appetizer that I would’ve gotten had I brought enough money (that I’m getting the next time).
    * the National Museum of the American Indian has some interesting, often tasty Native American cuisine - Southwest, Great Plains, Mesoamerican, Andean, etc. But being museum food, it’s ridiculously overpriced. And I found a hair in my Eastern Woodlands-inspired duck and field greens salad. I really hope it was mine. But it’s still worth a visit.
    * Old Town Alexandria (Virginia) is just gorgeous. I went there for a bachelor party. My friend and most of his buddies were from upstate New York so they’d never been there. We went into this one tavern that was still serving dinner. I ordered a soft shell crab sandwich. Their horrified faces were just too funny! :)
    * Oooh, that reminds me: as long as you are in the Chesapeake area (MD/DC/VA) make sure you find some seafood somewhere, especially crabs but oysters, shrimp, etc, too. True, the drought has made crabs scarce but save a little money to get a crabcake, soft shell, etc. Stay away from Phillips, though. Tasty, though overrated and lately they’ve been getting much of their crab meat from Thailand. Nothing against Thai crabs, but they’re just not the same.

    * One last note: if you do get up to Baltimore I could talk about good places to eat all day. If I could only recommend a few places, they’d have to be the Helmand (Afghan), Mughal Garden (Indian), Brass Elephant (American, expensive), Charleston (Southern, more expensive), Le Petit Louis (French, just as expensive) and anything in Little Italy (that includes Attman’s Delicatessen). The Reginald F. Lewis Museum of MD African American History (also in Little Italy) makes a mean catfish, but you have to pay admission to get to it. It is worth it, though. One final note: make sure you take some Berger cookies back with you (find them in any supermarket). They are sinful they are so good. They sell them at BWI (if you fly into there) but I’m certain they’re more expensive there.

Whew, my fingers hurt. I hope that helps. I’ve drafted my readers to wrack their brains about suggestions in the DC area. Again, have fun and a safe trip!

  5. Wait wait- what are you doing there? In CP? I went to UMD and am from Annapolis and lived downtown Bethesda, by American University, and in Old Town right before I moved here- I seriously know every place, street, restaurant - are you moving there?
