Events and other things

September 5 from 7-9 Honey Nails is having a party to celebrate the launch of honeyluxe. 7-9 pm
RSVP to luxe@honeynail.com
Food from The Warren City Club. Plus, Honeyteanies.

I have been invited to a fun event next Thursday night, so will report back later.

Had the preliminary meeting for the charity event I am doing. Thankfully, it is getting moved to March. Now we have time to do it right. So much work.

Leaving for DC in the morning. There is nothing like trying to work (emails) while looking at pictures of the apartment on my Treo while trying to find a couch on line and talking to Ed on the phone. Almost counterproductive, but not quite.

So, off to DC and College Park. Happy Labor Day!!!!

It’s not my fault, I got distracted

I went to talk again tonight at JLA again. I did prepare too!!! I swear!!!

It started out relatively well. Talking slower, making sense, looking across the crowd. That lasted 10 seconds. This girl was looking at me like I was CRAZY. Her brow was totally furrowed. It looked like it needed a couple of hits of Botox. Plus, she was shaking her head back and forth in DISAGREEMENT. That did it. Train of thought lost, could not get back. Talk over.

The Chair looked at me when I walked out and was like “That was short.”

Yes, yes it was. I’m sorry. Lesson learned. Practice OUT LOUD beforehand if no real public speaking in a long time.

I was not prepared…,

Normally, I am a good public speaker and can think fast on my feet. Not tonight!!!! I had to go speak to the new provisionals at JLA about their upcoming year. I was terrible. I spoke a mile a minute and was obviously nervous. Literally, 1000 words in two minutes. I kind of forgot about it with everything going on. Unfortunately, I told the story about people showing up to the Atlanta Bus Tour hung over and having to go see the trauma unit at 8:30 am. Not as funny as I thought it would be. Plus, the outfit and the makeup were not up to par. Ed left this morning and I had to deal with that and did not have time to put anything cute on.

Oh, well. I get to do it again tomorrow night. If you are there cut me some slack.

Plans Change and other things

I was supposed to be at Fashion Cares last. I did not go. Mom and I went to get our hair done at Jamison Shaw in the afternoon. Half of Atlanta was getting their hair done for the same event there. Then I went to pick up my dress at Saks. Pretty dress. (You will see it later at the Junior League Ball.) When I was pulling away to go home and get ready I stopped my car to ask my mom a question. That is when it hit. Are you sure you can go tonight since it is Ed’s last night here? Nooooo!!!! Then the waterworks started for the 10th time that day. So instead we went to Aria for dinner. Mind you, I gave up some great seats and the pre and after party, but sometimes plans change.

On to Aria. It is know for it’s slow roasted food. I LOVE this place. Aria is where I had my college graduation dinner and where we celebrated the major milestones of grad school for Ed. It is was recently voted the best restaurant in Atlanta too. There is a reason for that. It is flat out good.

The restaurant is small and chic. It is mostly white with dark accents. Not to many tables and impeccable service. Last night was slow, so we had very personal service. The menu changes on a daily basis depending on what is available.

I started with the lobster cocktail, as did my sister. Very flavorful and had great texture. Mom had the smoked salmon. It was the best salmon I have ever tasted. Ed ordered the escargot. I did not taste it, so take his word that it was good.

Mom and sister ordered the swordfish entree. Ed and I ordered the scallops with crab risotto. The swordfish was raved about. I love scallops, but the risotto was to die for. Very creamy, not undercooked. The flavor combined with the scallops was a great pairing.

Mom and sister do not drink (unfortunate for them, right). Ed choose a Sauvignon Blanc. I tasted it and really enjoyed it. The Pinot Noir selection on the by the glass menu is interesting because the restaurant goes out of their way to make sure each choice can be paired with any entree on the menu. I chose to go down that road and it was definitely worth the journey.

Dessert was next. Ed and I shared the peach tart with peach ice cream. Mom had a chocolate thing with a chocolate truffle. She actually scraped her plate. Melody ordered the plum tart which there was nothing left of either. Quite something for people who don’t eat dessert.

It was nice to have this time together. Even though I missed the big event. I will be there next year and the money went to charity.

The elusive elf boot napkin fold

Two lovely readers have provided the following links. Honestly, I thought my Google skills were a bit better, but what can you do. Kristie from Charmed Life provided this one. And Dena provided this option.

Please take a look if you have not seen this before because all your dinner guests will go nuts for it if you decide to use it at the Holidays.

Preparing for Christmas – Napkin folding

I worked for the retailer April Cornell as a merchandiser after I got out of college. I travelled around the Southeast and made sure the stores were pretty and standards met. Quite a feat when I did not care for anything that was sold there. At Christmas one year, we did all of this napkin folding and incorporated it on the table displays. That was relatively fun. I have been looking thru sites such as this one and this one trying to remember everything that used to come so easy. But the one fold I am looking for is the “elf boot”. Can’t find it anywhere. It is so cute and you can include candy or flowers easily with it. So if you know how to do it or a book that has the step-by-step, PLEASE let me know. Much appreciated.

The Mystery of the Missing Bonanno’s

I posted awhile back about several purchases I had made that I was still waiting on. The CK Bradley package eventually got cleared up. They had to call their bank to verify that I had paid for the merchandise that was now on sale and they did overnight it, so no harm no fowl. The Pennington skirt finally showed. Cute. Not to much drama.

OH! Nancy! Where are your Bonanno’s! On to the saga.

I checked my bank account transactions a week ago to get the exact date of when I ordered the two pairs of shoes in question. Well, they were late. But I wanted to give them time to get here without raising a stink. As I worked intently on Tuesday an email came across the board from my aunt wanting to know if I had received them. I checked the calendar again. Now they are REALLY late. So I made the call. I got all the UPS info from the lovely Vivian. “That’s odd” I said to myself. They should have already arrived if they were sent a week ago Monday. Low and behold, they had already arrived. And they were signed for at the downstairs concierge last Wednesday. Ok. The bigger issue is that this was the SECOND PACKAGE OF THE DAY THAT I WAS MISSING. The other was for work, so the smile of “I am trying to be nice, but…,” was already plastered on my face.

Here we go, Marilyn (Mom) is now involved. And let me tell you, my mom is a sweet Southern lady. But after you have worked in construction for 25+ years and you recently lost your husband, you don’t take shit from anyone. So she is downstairs next. The concierge is denying he signed for it because it is not in the sign in book. Not an excuse! It was your first day, you already worked for the concierge company and know the drill. How does the UPS guy suddenly come up with your name? Anyway, I digress. The saga has gone on for three days and finally the building management has agreed to pay for the missing shoes. We are just going to go with “stolen”. The lovely Vivian faxed over the missing invoices which were promptly turned over for payment.

So, technically, the case of the Missing Bonannos is not solved. But if I see someone walking around in the Palm Beach Classic style in UF colors I will ask to see their size. The green and white ones too.

Sick and at home. Yes, Scarlett. Tomorrow is another day.

I have had a BAD day. Plus, I have been sick for the last week. And everyone is out with Ed having fun before he leaves next week. I came home and slept for 2+ hours. And I don’t really like the new stuff from J.Crew like I thought I would. I have made the decision to rise and shine tomorrow, but for today… here are some sad/depressing song lyrics. (Yes, I am 15 years old.) Good song though.

“Missed The Boat”

While we’re on the subject
Could we change the subject now?
I was knocking on your ear’s door but you were always out
Looking towards the future
We were begging for the past
Well we knew we had the good things
But those never seemed to last
Oh please just last

Everyone’s unhappy
Everyone’s ashamed
Well we all just got caught looking
At somebody else’s page
Well nothing ever went
Quite exactly as we planned
Our ideas held no water
But we used them like a damn

Oh, and we carried it all so well
As if we got a new position
Oh, and I laugh all the way to hell
Saying yes, this is a fine promotion
Oh, and I laugh all the way to hell

Of course everyone goes crazy
Over such and such and such
We made ourselves a pillar
We just used it as a crutch
We were certainly uncertain
At least I’m pretty sure I am
Well we didn’t need the water
But we just built that go god damn

Oh, and I know this of myself
I assume as much for other people
Oh, and I know this of myself
We’ve listened more to life’s end gong
Than the sound of life’s sweet bliss

Was it ever worth it?
Was there all that much to gain?
Well we knew we missed the boat
And we’d already missed the plane
We didn’t read the invite
We just dance at our wake
All our favorites were playing
So we could shake, shake, shake, shake, shake

Tiny curtains open and we heard the tiny clap of little hands
A tiny man would tell a little joke and get a tiny laugh from all the folks
Sitting drifting around in bubbles and thinking it was us that carried them
When we finally got it figured out that we had truly missed the boat

Oh, and we carried it all so well
As if we got a new position
Oh, and we owned all the tools ourselves
But not the skills to make a shelf with
Oh, what useless tools ourselves

Cookbooks – I bought a few more

Yeah, I need to stop buying them. But I do use all of them. (At some point or another.) I really have nothing and everything to say so I will post these purchases. They were bought because (excuses made for) of this large, couples baby shower that I am co-hosting.
Paula Deen Celebrates!

Williams- Sonoma Small Plates

And Finally…,

Williams-Sonoma Easy Entertaining

Do I need these books, no. Am I REALLY excited about the party, yes. First time parents and this will be their only shower with approximately 40 people in attendance. Looks like we have picked out the invites and the couple finds out the sex tomorrow. Yeah! Everyone seems to be getting pregnant. So I need to make the best of it and what I do best, host a party. (Also, a reason to take those cake decorating classes I mentioned earlier.)
